DU traversing the Martian surface!

Kirori Mal College Robophysicists were invited to Mars Society’s University Rover Challenge (URC), the world’s premier robotics competition held from May 29-31, 2014 at Mars Desert Research Station, Utah, USA. URC challenges student teams to design and build the next generation of Mars Rovers that will one day work alongside astronauts exploring the Red Planet. The team, represented by six students of B.Sc. hons Physics alongwith Dr. Sumitra Mohanty, Faculty Advisor, took their rover and competed with many International Universities, including Cornell, Yale, Warsaw University of Technology, York University and many more. Ours was the only non-technical Institute. The steering committee of URC comprised of highly qualified and skilled judges, some doing internships and projects with NASA. The competition featured multiple revamped tasks and KMC Robophysicists was among top three in the presentation task. The Judges praised the efforts and approach put up by the team. By participating in URC, the students gained real-world Systems Engineering and Project Management experience. The team interacted with many International University students and Faculties and exchanged a lot of innovative ideas in the field of science and robotics. On its way back, our students visited various Faculties in the University of Utah, and were particularly inspired by some inter-disciplinary arenas like the Environmental Eng & Microbiol. Lab and Waste-water Management. Some collaboration ideas were discussed.

DU students house NASA astronauts in space

Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi, India in collaboration with University of North Florida(UNF), USA was selected and invited to NASA and National Institute of Aerospace’s Revolutionary Aerospace Systems Concepts and Academic Linkage (RASC-AL), from 17-19 June, 2014 at Florida, USA. A team of highly motivated students pursuing BSc.(H) Physics, mentored by Faculty Advisor Dr. Sumitra Mohanty, Associate Prof in Physics, Kirori Mal College and Dr. Nirmal Patel, Associate Prof in Physics, UNF, submitted their abstract on “Enabling Long Duration Missions in Cis Lunar Space through Holistic Habitat Design”. The abstract was chosen as one of the 14 abstracts to participate at the RASC-AL Forum in USA. The team from DU was the only international team that got selected amidst entries from all over the world.

On being selected, the team was invited to present a full technical report through an oral and poster presentation. Two students, Aishwariya Girdhar and Rashi Monga of B.Sc.(H) Phys along with Dr. Mohanty travelled to USA where international universities like Virginia Tech, University of Maryland, University of Illinois and more were participating. The presentations were heard by experts and Rocket Scientists from NASA’s Kennedy and Johnson Space Centre, NIA, Boeing and Industry.

The challenge for the team was to design a reliable and cost-effective habitat that could house astronauts in cis lunar space for long duration. The team planned a safe and efficient launch-return trajectory and also ensured enough logistics supply for 4 astronauts for a minimum of 60 days. The Judges and organizers greatly appreciated the presentation and were full of praise for the hard work and for the technologies implemented by the team, the only team from a non-technical background.

The teams got a special treat as a guided tour to NASA including the NASA’s Vehicle Assembly Building and the Launch Control Centre. The tour did not just kindle the curiosities of the students but gave them a close look at how NASA works.

Participation in RASC-AL gave the students exposure to real-time working and planning involved in a space mission. The students closely experienced this as they planned their own Space habitat and its journey to space.
